  TOEFL Independent Writing

  Topic:

Is it better to enjoy your money when you earn it or is it better to save your money for some time in the future?

Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

  Essay:

Paradoxically speaking, saving money or spending is prudent, but in different ways. Should we spend our money when we earn it, or should we save our money for sometime in the future? It is deplorable if we spend what we should prudently save, but it is not necessarily to be commended if we save what we should prudently spend.

On the one side, we should not spend money where we may save for the future. By definition, saving for anything requires us to not enjoy getting things now so that we can get bigger ones afterwards. A simple fact that is hard to learn is that the time to save money is when we earn it but do not enjoy it. In a certain sense, the habit of saving is itself an education because it teaches self-denial and cultivates the sense of order in money management. To save money, we may look everywhere we can cut a little bit from our spending, then this habit will add up to a meaningful sum. In view of these points, we must learn to save our money prudently first and enjoy our money later in life, which reminds us of a wise saying that goes: “Those who do not economize at present will agonize in the future.”

On the other side, why should we spare our money when we earn it, in case we are prudently investing for our own future in the right direction? Indeed, we may either save peanut money today or earn handsome income tomorrow. Although saving money for its own sake can enable us to feel some sort of financial security at present, only by investing in ourselves can we increase our earnings to a more successful level in the future. That is to say, it is prudent to spend money to develop our knowledge and experience in the head than purposely to keep idle banknotes in the pocket. Otherwise, it would sound as if we were penny-wise and pound-foolish, assuming that a penny well spent now is likely to bring in a pound for the time to come. Besides, if money is our hope for financial independence, we might never have it since the only security we could have in this world is a reserve of knowledge and experience.

As a conclusion, to spend or to spare money is a personal decision. So, it is up to us whether to spend our money when we earn it or to save it for the future. More often than not, being prudent with money is a paradox in life.
