  IELTS Writing Task 2

  China 2018-05-24

  Topic:

children are facing more pressures nowadays from academic (educational), social and commercial perspectives. What are the causes of these pressures and what measures should be taken to reduce these pressures?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

What do you think makes children deeply unhappy? Researchers are pointing the finger at pressures from various perspectives—academic, social and commercial. While the causes of these pressures on children seem clear enough, there are no simple measures to reduce pressure-related unhappiness.

It is easy to explain why children are facing academic, social and commercial pressures. Firstly, although as parents there are few pleasures greater than their children succeeding at school, sometimes the pressure is way too much. If too much pressure are being put on children to do well academically, it can backfire severely and end up causing them to be unhappy. Secondly, speaking of social pressure is finding fault particularly with peer pressure which is something everyone will face in school, among friends and rivals. The ugly reality is that peer pressure reaches its highest intensity at just the age when children tend to be most insensitive, unkind, even cruel with the purpose of making others feel unhappy. Thirdly, advertising appeals to children as consumers who are under pressure to buy things they do not really need with the money they probably do not have and impress people they usually do not like; and, as a result, they may feel unhappy.

Unfortunately, those feelings of unhappiness among children nowadays cannot be fixed with easy solutions. Being of different kinds, not all pressures from academic, social and commercial perspectives are bad for preteen and teenage years. That said, there are possible measures need to be taken to enhance the wellbeing of children who are under constant pressures of any kind. To begin with, parents have to draw a line on the expectations of their children and find out the true potential of their children, rather than pushing them to unrealistic limits, while teachers should not give too many tests to students and pressurize them to do homework everyday. Meanwhile, with patience and guidance, parents should keep an eye on their children who fall victims to online pressure through social networking. Simultaneously, the authorities should do more to regulate advertising that are intended for the eyes and ears of children who are anxious to buy unnecessary things, and that commercial anxiety is also a source of unhappiness.

In conclusion, there are no easy solutions when children are facing more pressures from academic, social and commercial perspectives. Frankly, these pressures that cause children to be unhappy are not likely to go away. After all, who is to blame?
